Mr. Hepbron, from a Select Committee, reported favorably,

Senate bill entitled an Act to authorize and empower the
Governor to appoint an additional Justice of the Peace in the
Second Election District in Kent County.

Which was read the first time.

Mr. Sulivane from a Select Committee, reported favor-
ably,

House bill entitled an Act, regulating fences in Meekins'
Neck, in Harper's Island, District Number Six, Dorchester
County.

Which was read the second time.

Mr. Peter, from a Joint Committee, submitted the follow-
ing :

SENATE CHAMBER,
Annapolis, January 18th, 1878.

Dear Sir :—By a Joint Resolution of both Houses of the
Legislature of Maryland, we have been appointed a Commit-
tee, to inform you of your election this day, as one of the
Senators to represent the State of Maryland in the United
States Senate, from March the 4th, 1879, for the term of six
years.

Permit us to tender you our congratulations upon this
honor conferred, as we feel confident that your representa-
tion of the State of Maryland will be such as to protect and
serve the best interest of her people, and at the same time
reflect credit upon yourself, and promote the welfare of our
common country.
