14 JOURNAL OF PROCEEDINGS [Jan. 4,

The hour of one o'clock having arrived, the Senate pro-
ceeded to the election of a State Treasurer.

The Senators proceeded to deposit their ballots in the bal-
lot box, which was delivered to Messrs. McLane and Steiner,
who conjointly with the Committee of the House of Delegates,
retired from the Senate Chamber to count the ballots.

Said Committee having performed their duty, returned
with the following

REPORT.

The Committee appointed by the Senate and House of Dele-
gates to count the votes cast for Treasurer of Maryland, beg
leave to report that

The votes cast by the Senate were in number............... 22

The votes cast by the House of Delegates were in number 70

Making in all................................................ 92

Of which number Barnes Compton received 75 votes, and
J. McPherson Scott received 15 votes, and there were 2
blank ballots.

We, therefore, respectfully report that Barnes Compton,
having received the largest number of votes, is returned by
the Committee as elected to the office of Treasurer of Mary-
land.

Whereupon it was declared that the Hon. Barnes Comp-
ton is duly elected Treasurer.

Mr. Combs of St. Mary's submitted the following message:

BY THE SENATE,

January 4th, 1878.
Gentlemen of the House of Delegates:

The Hon. Barnes Compton having been elected State
Treasurer, we propose, with the concurrence of your Honor-
able Body, that the Presiding Officers of the two Houses ad-
dress him a joint letter, informing him of his election.
