of Governor Herbert R. O'Conor 615

lean, in this time of crisis, will devote himself without stint to accomplishing
the objectves of production required of him.

We are essentially a peace-loving people, content to live our own lives in
peace. We have no designs against the peoples of any other nation. We are
in this war, not of our own volition, but because aggressor-nations, by treachery
and deceit, have forced us to take up arms against them. There can be no
compromise now. Whatever it requires of us in work, in money, in sacrifices,
even to the supreme sacrifice, shall be forthcoming. This citadel of America,
which has been the symbol of hope for all mankind this past century and a
half, will not be shaken now, by the roar and tempest of militaristic ambitions.

In such a struggle, and for such a cause, America cannot lose. We must
and we will, assuredly triumph in an effort that means so much for the welfare
and the happiness of millions of free men and free women the world over.
