15th day of March, 1836, commissioned as Chief Jus-
tice of the Supreme Court of the United States of
America, which office he filled with great distinction
and marked ability until the time of his death, which
occurred on the 12th clay of October, in the year 1864;
and

Whereas, The Stare of Maryland in recognition of
his great public service has caused to be erected upon
the State House Hill at Annapolis, Maryland, a bronze
statue upon a granite pedestal, upon which some suit-
able inscription should be placed.

Resolved, That the Superintendent of Public Build-
ings be, and he is hereby authorized and directed, to
cause to be inscribed by some skilled artisan upon the
front of said granite pedestal, the following:

"Roger Brooke Taney,

Chief .Justice of the United States of America,

Born March 17th, 1777,

Commissioned Chief Justice, March 15th, 1886,

Died October 12th, 1864."

And, upon the side of said pedestal the following:

"Attorney General of Maryland, 1827,

Attorney General of U. S. 1831;" and,

Be it Resolved, That the cost of said inscription, not
to exceed seventy-five dollars, shall be paid by the
Governor out of the contingent fund at the disposal of
the Executive.

Which was read and referred to the Committee on
Ways and Means.

The Speaker laid before the House the following:
To the Honorable,

Dr. George Everhart, Speaker of the House.

Dear Sir.—The Ministers of the Methodist Epis-
copal Church of Baltimore and vicinity in session in
Baltimore on this fourteenth day of March, passed
unanimously the following resolution which they
petition the Honorable Speaker to read to the House.

To the Governor and General Assembly of the State
of Maryland:
