Ninety-nine having answered to their names the
clerk announced that a majority of all members-elect
being present the House was ready under the pro-
visions of the Constitution to proceed to business.

On motion of Mr. Dennis, of Worcester county,

Hon. Edward E. Goslin, of Caroline county, was
called to the chair for the purpose of temporary organ-
ization.

Mr. Dennis, of Worcester, and Mr. De. B. Walbach,
of Charles, conducted the Speaker pro tem. to the
Chair.

Whereupon,

Mr. Carville D Benson, of Baltimore county, nomi-
nated Dr. Geo. Y. Everhart as Speaker of the House
of Delegates.

Mr. Faega, of Allegany, nominated Mr. Jas. E.
Godwin, of Baltimore city, for Speaker.

Dr. Richard S. Hill, of Prince George's, and William
N. Harry, of Frederick, were appointed tellers.

The House thereupon proceeded to the election of
Speaker.

Upon counting the ballots it was found that Dr.
Ge. Y. Everhart had received 70 votes, and Mr. Jas.
E. Godwin, 27 votes.

Whereupon,

The Speaker pro tem. appointed Mr. Godwin and
Mr. Benson, of Baltimore county, to escort the Speaker-

elect to the Chair.

The Speaker thereupon addressed the^ House as
follows:

ADDRESS.

GENTLEMEN OF THE HOUSE OF DELEGATES:

In entering upon the discharge of my duties as pre-
siding officer of this House, I wish to thank you for
the very great honor you have conferred upon me.
For to be elected Speaker of this House of Delegates
is an honor of which any Marylander might be proud,

while I am grateful for the signal honor which you
have conferred upon me, I feel most sensitively the
