1904.] OF THE HOUSE OF DELEGATES. 169

The Speaker of the House of Delegates then an-
nounced that a quorum not being present, the House
could not proceed to business, and ordered the Ser-
geant at-Arms to bring in the absentees.

The Sergeant-at,Arms reported that he was unable
to find any of the absent members.

JOINT CONVENTION OF THE GENERAL ASSEM-
BLY OF MARYLAND.

ELECTION OF A SENATOR IN CONGRESS.

Pursuant to adjournment,

The hour of 12 o'clock, meridian, having arrived,

The Senators of Maryland, escorted by the House
Committee, Messrs. Duvall and Kain, appeared at the
Hall of the House of Delegates, for the purpose of
convening in Joint Assembly with that body for the
election of a United States Senator in the Congress of
the United States for six years, in succession of the
Hon. Louis E. McComas, whose term of office will ex-
pire March 4th,. A. D., 1905.

The Speaker of the House of Delegates assumed the
Chair as Chairman of the Joint Assembly.

The roll of the Senators was then called by the Sec-
retary of the Senate, and it appeared that two Senators
answered to their names.

The Chief Clerk of the House of Delegates then pro-
ceeded to call the roll of the House of Delegates, and
5 members answered to their names.

The Chairman of the Joint Assembly then ordered
the Sergeant-at-Arms to bring in the absentees—after
a careful search he reported that he could find only one
member of either house.

Whereupon,

The Speaker of the House of Delegates, as Chair-
man of the Joint Assembly, announced that a quorum
or both Houses not being present, a vote for United
States Senator in succession to Hon. Louis E. McComas,
could not be taken.
