( 90 ) Their Maties Somerset Sc The Jurors for their Maties being Sworn upon Contra } the holy Evangelists at a Grand Jury held for the body of this Sarah: Russell County in June Court doe present and find that Sarah: Russell ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ the Widdow of George Russell late of Mattapony hundred deceased did about the tenth of June last past goe to bed to One ffr: Williams - who formerly lived in Mattapony & then & there in Lasivious imbraces, did Continue Shamefully One whole night. The said Sarah not being ignorant that the Said Sin was heynious and Scandalous or anywayes ashamed being found in the manner, and with audacious & impudent language did reply to the admonishers of her concerning her impudent & lascivious Carriage both then and at other times, that She Cared not if all the world See her. Now their Maties Attorney Comes and Sayes, that the Said Sarah not having the fear of God before her eyes or regarding the good Laws of this Province agt fornication & Basterd bearing ___ hath dishonoured Allmighty God, broken the Said Laws, given Scandall & evil Example to their Maties good people of this Province and desires judgmt may be entered against her according to Law in that Case made & provided &ca. Ja: Sangster Clr. Inditmts. The Indictmt being read to which the Said Sarah: Pleaded not guilty, referring her Self for tryal to the worll. Court. ___ Which Court having heard the following Depos viz The Deposition of Wm: Potter aged about thirty years. This Deponent Saith that he hath been of Late in the imploymt. of the widdow Russell a Considerable time in weeding her Corne out of the first and Second woods, & all that time of his aboad at the sd Widdows house nor at any other time, he the Deponent never Saw or knew, other behaviour by the Said Widdow, but what was Civil and honest, this the Deponent Saith and no further nor other Can he Say relating to the Said Widdows life & Conversation without apparent wrong to her Self & himself. In Wittness whereof he hath hereunto put his hand Memorandum that this day being the 30th: day of July William: Potter 1692. Came prsonally before me ye above named Deponent and made Oath upon the holy Evangelist to the truth of all above written. Wittness my hand. Saml. Hopkins _____ Nothing being inserted agt the Dft in the Said Deposition, or by any other Evidence nor the Clrk of Indictmts appearing. The Court dismist the action & Ordered that sd Clr of Indictmts, viz Ja. Sangster loose his fees in the abovesd Cause . _______ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Ordered that fourty dayes Owing by Mary Berry alias Adams be paid to ye Overseer mr Andrew: Whittington & Richard: Chambers towards the making a Road nearest & best to the old road betwixt sd Whittingtons & Capt Smiths mill at descretion of ye sd Overseers Whittington or Chambers |
