( 182 ) March 15th 1692/3 // The Deposition of Elizabeth Lawrence aged twenty years this Deponent Saith that after Several Complaints made to Samuell:Hopkins Senr one of his Maties Justices of the Peace for this County by me the Deponent agt John Pope of the Said County his many & often reitterated temptations & profers made to Comitt folly & lewdness with the Deponent the which the Deponent did Shun untill Some time in Janry last past & then he the Said John:Pope did over Come the Said Deponent & his owne house did Comitt the act of fornication & uncleannesse the Deponent and did then & there begett the Deponent with Child, with which Child then begotten she the Deponent now goeth: This the Said Deponent Saith & further She Saith not witnesse her hand - - - - - - - - - - Elizabeth E Larrance her marke . Memorandum that this day (to witt) the 21th. day of May. 1692. Came Elizabeth Larrance & did make Oath before us to the truth of the above Written. wittness our hands. James. Round Saml. Hopkins And this day (viz) the day aforesd Came the foresd Jurers of the Cause depending betwixt their Maties & Jno. Pope. who being calld over each man prticularly by his name & being examined are all agreed of their verdict The plts & Dft. being likewise calld the verdict is read in these express words following (viz) Wee of the Jury do find the defendant Guilty of the Indictmt. James Curtiss. foreman. // Which verdict this Court Ordrs to be entered Ordered likwise the said John:Pope give Security for to maintaine the said Elizabeth Larrance Child & keep this County indempnified from any Charge or trouble that may ensue thereby and also for the sd Popes good behaviour ___ Whereupon Came the Said John:Pope with his Securities Benjamine: Idlott: & Walter Read and the Said Jno. Pope did acknowledge him Self to be indebted to their Maties in the Sum of fifty pounds Sterling & the sd Idlot & Read in the Sum of five & twenty pounds Sterling money a piece due to be leavied on their goods and Chattels lands & Tennements for their Maties uses &ca. The Condicon of which Recognizance is Such that if the above bound John: Pope doe maintain Eliz:Larrance Child & keep this County indempnified from any Charge or trouble that may ensue thereby as also be of the good behaviour & abearance to all thir Maties Liege people of this Province dureing this Courts pleasure then the recognizance to be void and of none effect Otherwayes (to be) & remaine in full power force & vertue. // Ordered the Jurors be allowed their accustomed fees / |
