CHAPTER
46.
AN ACT to provide for the better security of life and
property in the city of Baltimore, by increasing and
arming the police force thereof.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted
by the General Assembly
of Maryland, That in order to preserve the peace, and
better to secure the safety of persons and property in
the city of Baltimore, the mayor and city council of
Baltimore, be and they are hereby authorised and required
to increase and strengthen the police by day and
night, of the said city; and that efficiency and success
may be perfectly assured, the said corporation shall
cause the police officers and men, whether bailiffs, night
watch, or however designated, to be liberally paid,
and when injured in discharge of their duties in person
or apparel, fairly indemnified therefor.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted,
That the mayor and
city council of Baltimore, be and they are hereby authorised
and empowered to provide for the arming of
the police of the said city, in such manner and under
such regulations as they shall deem proper.

SEC. 3. And be it enacted,
That although a commission
and a badge shall be furnished to each member
of the police, it shall be no defence when such
member is resisted or assaulted, that his commission or
badge is not exhibited, but it shall be sufficient when
discharging his duties, if he proclaims his character, or
he is otherwise known to be such member.

SEC. 4. And be it enacted,
That the act entitled,
an act providing for the appointment of bailiffs for the
city of Baltimore, passed at November session eighteen
hundred and twelve, chapter one hundred and ninety-four,
and which limits their number to one hundred,
the provisions of which are enlarged and supplied by
this act, be and the same is hereby repealed.

That this act shall take
effect from its passage.
