     SEC. 9.  And be it enacted, That this act shall go
into operation and effect from and after the date of its
passage.

                           CHAPTER 136.

AN ACT to authorise the New York and Washington
     Printing Telegraph Company, to construct and maintain
     lines of Telegraph wires through the State of Maryland,
     in a direction from Wilmington Delaware, to
     the City of Washington.
Preamble.
     WHEREAS, the New York and Washington Printing
Telegraph company, associated for the purpose of
constructing a line of telegraph wires from the city of
New York to the city of Washington, through the
States of New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland
and the District of Columbia, by way of Philadelphia
and Baltimore, have made application to the
Legislature of this State, to legalize the construction and
continuance of the said lines through this State;
Therefore,
     Authority to
construct
lines of telegraph
wires,
&c.
     SECTION 1.  Be it enacted by the General Assembly
of Maryland,
That the said company shall have authority
from time to time, to erect, lay down, construct,
maintain and keep up a line or lines of telegraph wires,
or conductors through this State from the border of the
State of Delaware, through the city of Baltimore to the
District of Columbia, either along, over, upon or under
any of the public roads or highways, or across, through,
at the bottom of or under any of the waters within the
limits of this State, and also along, over, through, upon
or under any other land within this State, and also,
along, over said lands, by the erection of masts, poles,
posts and other necessary fixtures for sustaining the
wires or conductors of such line or lines, and by suspending
such wires or conductors thereon, or by constructing,
establishing and maintaining lines of wires or
conductors upon or under ground, or under water with
or without tubes, or covering, or by any other means,
which may from time to time be deemed best by the
said company, and such company shall be authorised
to select and adopt from time to time, in addition to or
in lieu of the original route or routes selected by them,
