                                            CHAPTER 48.

An act to authorise the levy court of Frederick county to levy a sum of
    money to purchase a tract of land and build a house thereon for the use
    of the Paupers, and sell the present Poor House of said county and for
    other purposes.

    Passed Jan.
30. 1826.
    SEC. 1.  Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That the levy court of Frederick county be, and they are hereby
authorised to contract for and purchase a tract of land, not
exceeding one hundred acres, on such terms as they may deem
most advantageous, and to build on such land so purchased, a
house for the accommodation of paupers; Provided, the amount
to be paid for said land and building such poor house, shall not
exceed the sum of twelve thousand dollars.

    2.  And be it enacted, That so soon as the said tract of land
shall have been purchased, and the poor house built thereon
as aforesaid, the levy court shall proceed to sell at public auction
the present poor house of said county, and the lot of ground
attached thereto, on such conditions as they may think adviseable;
the proceeds of which sale shall be applied towards the
payment of the purchase of the tract of land directed to be
purchased by the first section of this act.

    3.  And be it enacted, That the levy court of said county be
and they are hereby authorised to levy for the purposes before
mentioned, a sum of money not exceeding twelve thousand dollars,
including the amount which may be received from the sale
of the present poor house and lot of ground attached thereto;
Provided, That the amount levied shall not exceed the sum of
fifteen hundred dollars in any one year.
Levy $12,000.
    4.  And be it enacted, That the trustees of the poor of Frederick
county be, and they are hereby directed to provide suitable
implements of husbandry at the expense of the county, and
to cause those paupers who may be maintained in the poor house
of said county, to perform such labor on said land when purchased
as aforesaid, as may be consistent with their health and
the public interest.

    5.  And be it enacted, That the trustees of the poor of said
county, shall dispose of all products arising from the cultivation
of said land over and above what may be necessary for the
maintenance of the paupers of said county; the amount of money arising
from which sale or sales shall be returned on oath
to the levy court of said county, to be applied by the said court
to the payment of county taxes.
