1904.] OF THE SENATE. 59
contrary would restore it more nearly to its original
appearance, and acid to its durability and safety.
THE ADDITION TO THE HOUSE OF CORRECTION.
The work now under way at the House of Correction
consists of a large additional wing to the west, cor-
responding in general appearance, but somewhat larger
than the present east wing. The prison is greatly over
crowded, and this wing will be used chiefly for addi-
tional cell room, a large workshop in the basement,
and rooms for keepers and material supplies.
The new wing has been arranged for receiving
modern steel cells, allowing a greater number, owing
to the economy in space, to be placed in the same area,
and leaves the entire basement unobstructed, in which
is located a workshop 216 feet 4 inches by 45 feet 8
inches. The plans and specifications for this work
upon which estimates were given, called for the build-
ing itself to be constructed and enclosed. It was under-
stood that the cells, plumbing, heating, etc., are to be
added later on.
It is gratifying to know that the work has been
practically completed in a most thorough and substan-
tial manner, at a cost under the estimate given.
TROOP "A" ARMORY.
The General Assembly at its last regular session ap-
propriated the total sum of $50,000 for the construc-
tion and equipment of an armory near Pikesville, Bal-
timore county, for the use of Troop "A", M. N. G.
An eligible lot of ground was promptly acquired,
and an appropriate building begun, which is now
almost complete, and ready to be turned over by the
contractors to the State.
A VALUABLE STATE PUBLICATION.
The Board of Public Works undertook the publica-
tion of a book on the resources of Maryland, as au-
thorized by Chapter 512 of the Acts of 1902.
The board entrusted the preparation of this book to
Mr. Norval E. Foard, a capable, painstaking and ex-
perienced writer and newspaper editor, who did his
work well.
