LAWS OF MARYLAND.

 

CHAPTER 358.

 

AN ACT to authorize the Board of Managers of

 

the Maryland House of Correction to hire con-

 

vict labor to the Maryland Canal Company and

 

prescribe the manner of payment for -the same

 

by said canal company.

 

Whereas the early completion of a branch canal

 

from the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal to the city

portance to the pecuniary and material interests of
this State and of said city of Baltimore ; and

 

Whereas it is believed that the construction of

 

such branch canal by the Maryland Canal Company

 

can be accomplished at a moderate cost by employ-

victs under sentence to the Maryland House of

 

Correction ; therefore —

 

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly

 

of Maryland, That the Board of Managers of the

 

Maryland House of Correction be and they are

 

hereby authorized and directed to hire to the

Maryland Canal Company, upon such terms as

 

may be agreed upon by and between the said Board

 

of Managers and said canal company, such able

 

bodied male convicts under sentence to said House

 

of Correction as may from time to time be applied

 

for by said Maryland Canal Company, which said

 

convicts, whilst so hired out to said canal company,

 

it shall be the duty of the said Managers of the

 

House of Correction to clothe, feed and guard in

 

all respects, so far as practicable, as if they were

 

engaged at work within said House of Correction ;

 

and payment of the compensation, which may be

 

agreed on by and between said Maryland Canal

 

Company and the said Managers of the House of

Compensat'n.

Correction, for the hire of such convicts, the said

 

canal company shall issue to the said Managers of

 

the House of Correction, and the said managers

 

shall accept the stock of said Maryland Canal

 

Company at such rates as may be mutually
