SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That section two of
|

"An act for the relief of St. John's College," be and
|
 
|
the same is hereby repealed and re-enacted with
|
 
|
amendments so as to read as follows :
|
 
|
2. That the Treasurer, upon the warrant of the
|
 
|
Comptroller, be and he is hereby authorized and
|
 
|
directed to pay to the said Visitors and Governors,
|
 
|
annually, in instalments, beginning October the first,
|
 
|
eighteen hundred and seventy-eight, as set forth in
|

two hundred dollars for each of the students provided

with board, fuel, lights and washing free of charge,
|
 
|
under the provisions of the act and section hereby
|

repealed and re-enacted, until the number of such

students shall have been reduced by the expiration

of the period for which they were appointed, or oth-
|
 
|
erwise, to one for each county and senatorial district
|
 
|
of the State, and thereafter to pay to the said Visitors
|
 
|
and Governors the sum of five thousand two hun-
|
 
|
dred dollars per annum, payable in three instalments,
|
 
|
on the first day of October, the first day of Jan-
|

uary, and the first day of April, to be applied by
|
 
|
them in furnishing board, fuel, lights and washing
|
 
|
to one of the students of the Collegiate Department,
|
 
|
educated free of charge for tuition, from each sena-
|
 
|
torial district of the State, and appointed by the
|
 
|
Boards of School Commissioners of the several coun-
|
 
|
ties and the city of Baltimore, by and with the
|
 
|
advice and consent of the Senator in their respective
|
 
|
counties and senatorial districts, after a competative
|
 
|
examination of the candidates for such appointments,
|
 
|
who shall produce before the said commissioners
|
 
|
satisfactory evidence of their moral character, and of
|
 
|
their inability or the inability of their parents or guar-
dians to pay the regular College charges ; provided,
that no one of the said appointments shall be held
|
 
|
by the same student for more than four years, unless
|
 
|
the time of holding such appointment be extended
|
 
|
by the Faculty of the College, and that each student
