1892.] OF THE HOUSE OF DELEGATES. 1495
The above coal was shipped by the following coal
companies :
Consolidation Coal Co., of Md., . 39,351.00 tons
George's Creek Coal & Iron Co., of Md., 7,413.02 "
Union Mining Co.. of Md., - . 1,314.02 "
West Virginia Coal Co., of W. Va., 2,425.10 "
Third Answer;
At the close of navigation on the Canal in December,
1891, there were ninety boats in actual service, seven-
ty-eight of which were engaged in the business of
transporting coals from Cumberland to Williamsport,
Md., Georgetown, D. C., and other intermediate points
along the Canal, and twelve boats were engaged in the
transportation of stone, grain, and other miscellaneous
merchandise. All of these boats were poorly equipped
with mules and crews ; these boats consisted of eighty-
two boats that had been repaired and eight boats
newly built at Georgetown and Cumberland.
Had the Canal boats been properly and fully
equipped with mules and crews they could have moved
more than double the amount of coal they did, as it
was from no lack of business or coal to move that the
small tonnage was delivered, as the offerings of coal
were in excess of the fullest capacity of the boats
engaged to move ; the late period of the season being
the cause that deterred boatmen and others from in-
vesting in equipment.
Since the close of navigation in 1891, there have been
laiger contracts made for the construction of new canal-
boats and which boats are now. being constructed;
there are also many canal-boats being repaired for
business. The actual contracts made for the construc-
tion of new boats, amount to about one hundred boats.
These boats with the repaired and being repaired, will
furnish tonnage during the present season to move
over one-half million tons of coal, besides other classes
of material and merchandise. Also a large amount of
money has been invested in mules and equipment of
boats being built and repaired for use on the Canal
during the present and succeeding seasons The total
number of boats now on the Canal, and in the process
of repair or awaiting to be repaired, will exceed 250
boats.
