section.

City Council," to come in after section 31, and to be


called section 31 A.


SEC. 31 A. No mechanic nor laborer employed by the


mayor and city council of Baltimore, or by any officer,

agent or contractor under them, shall be required to work

a day's
work

more than nine hours per day as a day's labor. Provided,


however, that this section shall not apply to mechanics and

laborers whose hours of labor are already fixed at less than


nine hours per day ; and provided further that the provisions


of this act shall not apply to the employees of the fire


department, Bay View Asylum, or the Baltimore City jail.


Any such officer, agent or contractor who shall require any


mechanic or laborer to work more than nine hours per day,


contrary to the provisions of this section, shall be fined not


less than ten dollars nor more than fifty dollars for each


offence ; one-half of such fine to go to the informer ; said


fines to be collected as other fines are collected by law.


SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That this act shall


take effect from the date of its passage.

Effective.

CHAPTER 287.


AN ACT to amend section two hundred and fifty-eight of


article eleven of the Code of Public Local Laws of Mary-


land relating to the lien of Livery Stable Keepers in


Frederick City, and also to add an additional section to


said article to provide for the punishment of persons hiring


horses or vehicles from livery stable keepers in Frederick


City to go a certain distance and using said horses, or


vehicle for a greater distance.


SECTION 1. Se it enacted by the General Assembly of


Maryland, That section two hundred and fifty-eight of

article eleven of the Code of Public Local Laws of Mary-

ment and

land, be and the same is hereby repealed and re-enacted so

new
section

as to read as hereinafter set forth, and that an additional


section be and is hereby added to said article, as herein-


after set forth, to be known as section two hundred and


sixty A.


258. It shall be lawful for any livery stable keeper in


Frederick City to retain in his custody any horse, mare or


gelding, placed under his care for livery, and also any
