30. That the treasurer is authorized on the order of the


Board of Public Works to obtain duplicate certificates for

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That this act shall take effect


from the date of its passage.

CHAPTER 229.


AN ACT to appropriate a sum of money to assist in defray-


ing the expenses incurred in erecting a monument on the


battle ground of Autietam in this State, to the soldiers of


the Fifth Regiment, Maryland Volunteers who fell in that


battle, and to mark the site where the regiment fought.


WHEREAS, the survivors of the Fifth Regiment of Mary


land Volunteers have caused to be erected upon the battle

fields of Antietam, a monument to mark the place occupied


by that gallant regiment in that sanguinary battle, and in


memory of the members of that regiment who there fell in


defense of the Union, and


WHEREAS, the cost of erecting the said monument


amounted to the sum of nine hundred and forty dollars, of

which sum there still remains due and unpaid the sum of


five hundred and thirty dollars, therefore,


SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of


Maryland, That the sum of five hundred and thirty dollars,


be and the same is hereby appropriated to assist in defraying
