CHAPTER 173.


AN ACT supplementary to an act entitled an act to incor-


porate the Sisters of Charity of Saint Joseph's in Freder-


ick County passed at the December session of the General


Assembly of Maryland, in the year eighteen hundred and


sixteen, chapter ninety-five.


WHEREAS, Elizabeth A. Seton and others associated with


her, being unmarried women, and above the age of twenty-

one years, formed themselves into a religious association


by the name of the " Sisters of Charity of Saint Joseph's,"


for the purpose, under the superintendence of certain clergy-


men of their religious persuasion, of devoting their lives to


works of piety, charity and usefulness and especially for


the care of the sick, the succor of aged, infirm and necessi-


tous persons, and the education of young females, and


WHEREAS, by an act of the General Assembly of Mary-


land passed at the December session, eighteen hundred


and sixteen, chapter ninety-five, the said Elizabeth A. Seton,


and others associated with her, and their successors here-


after to become "Sisters of Charity of Saint Joseph," ac-


cording to the rules and regulations of their association


for the time being, were incorporated by the corporate name


and style of the "Sisters of Charity of Saint Joseph's,"


with perpetual succession and power, to sue and be sued,


and to have and use a common seal, and to take and hold


in fee simple, or otherwise ; the farm in Frederick County


on which they now dwell, and any other lands and real


estate and any personal and mixed estate or property, to

sell, lease, dispose of and convey in as full and ample


manner as any person or body corporate holding any lands


or property, real personal or mixed, may sell, lease, dispose


of and convey the same ; and to collect and receive the


rents, profits, proceeds and emoluments of all property by


them so held or possessed, and apply the same to the uses


of their said association according to the rules and regula-


tions established from time to time for the government


thereof, provided, always, that they shall not at any time


hold, use, possess or enjoy more than eight hundred acres


of land, nor shall their personal estate at any time exceed


in value the sum of fifty thousand dollars, and whereas, it


is represented to this General Assembly, that the said cor-


poration of the " Sisters of Charity of Saint Joseph's " has


been eminently successful since its incorporation in the


year eighteen hundred and sixteen to the present time far


beyond the expectation of its promoter and originator, and
