CHAPTER 442.


AN ACT to prohibit persons from using toll-roads, and evading


payment of tolls.


SECTION 1. And be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-


land, That if any person or persons shall, with intent to defraud


any turnpike or other company, authorized by law to receive tolls


for use of its roads, pass through any private gate or bars, or along


any grounds near said road, to avoid any toll-gate and escape pay-

avoid the payment of any just tolls, or shall refuse to pay tolls

guilty of a misdemeanor, and upon conviction thereof shall be

upon failure to pay said fine, shall be imprisoned not more than


five days; provided, however, that nothing herein contained shall


prohibit persons from passing upon any turnpike or toll road,


from one point to another between the gates upon said pike or
road, nor shall prohibit persons owning lands adjacent to any toll-


gate, from using or crossing the same for their own private pur-


pose.

CHAPTER 443.


AN ACT making it unlawful for any railroad company in this


State to withhold from any of its employees any part of the


wages of said employees for relief or insurance purposes.


SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,


That it shall not be lawful for any railroad company doing busi-
