124 A. It shall be unlawful for any person or persons, or asso-


ciation of persons, to bet, gamble or make books and pools on the


result of any trotting race or running race of horses, or race of


any kind, or cocking-main or any base ball match, or contest of


any kind, or to establish, keep, rent, or use, or knowingly suffer


to be used or occupied any house, building or portion of a build-


ing, vessel or place on land or water for the purpose of making or


selling therein any book or pool, or of otherwise betting or gam-


bling, or of permitting gambling or betting therein or thereon upon
the result of any trotting race or running race of horses, or race

of any kind or cocking-main, or any base ball match, or on any

election or contest of any kind; provided, however, that nothing


in this section shall prevent pool-making, book-making, or bet-


ting on horse races on the grounds of any agricultural association


in this State during the days on which the " fairs " of such asso-


ciations shall actually be held, or upon any race course or driving


park in this State; any person violating any of the provisions of


this section shall be deemed guilty of a misdeameanor, and upon


conviction thereof shall be subject to a fine not exceeding five


hundred dollars, one-half to go to the informer, or imprisonment


in jail for a period of not less than six months nor more than one


year.


SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That this act shall take effect from

hundred and forty-nine, of article four, of the Code of Public


Local Laws, title " City of Baltimore," sub-title " Coroners In-


quests and Dead Bodies."


SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,


That section one hundred and forty-nine, of article four, of the


Code of Public Local Laws, title " City of Baltimore," sub-title

" Coroners Inquests and Dead Bodies," be and the same is hereby


repealed and re-enacted with an amendment so as to read as fol-


lows :


149. The governor by and with the advice and consent of the


senate, shall appoint and commission four competent persons to


act as coroners for the City of Baltimore, to hold office during
