	Maryland be and he is hereby authorized and di-	Authorized
	rected to take such action and do all such things on	to take action
	behalf of the State in the suit now pending in the
	Circuit Court of the United States for the Maryland
	District, in equity, between Daniel K. Stewart, as
	complainant, and the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal
	Company and others, as defendants, and in any
	other proceedings which may be instituted or prose-
	cuted against said Chesapeake and Ohio Canal
	Company, as shall be proper in his judgment for the effectual protection of the interest of the State of
	Maryland in the said Chesapeake and Ohio Canal
	Company; and the said Attorney-General is further authorized and directed to institute and take any	Institute pro-
	and all such other proceedings, in the Supreme	ceedings.
	Court of the United States or elsewhere, as may in
	his judgment be necessary and proper for the pro-
	tection of the interests of the State of Maryland in
	said Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Company.
	SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That the Comp-
	troller of the Treasury be and he is hereby directed
	at any and all times, upon the requirement of the
	Attorney-General of Maryland, to execute any and	Execute
	all bonds and stipulations whatsoever in the name	bonds and
	and on behalf of the State of Maryland, whether as	stipulations.
	principal or surety, or by way of indemnification to
	sureties, which the said Attorney-General may certify
	to him to be proper to be executed in or about any
	proceedings whatsoever, whether at law or in equity,
	now pending or hereafter to be instituted in any
	court or courts whatsoever, touching the interests
	of the State in the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal
	Company, or touching the property, tolls, revenues
	or management of said company.
	SEC. 3. And be it further enacted, That the faith
	of the State of Maryland be and the same is hereby
	pledged to the full and perfect indemnity of any	Faith of the
	surety or sureties, obligor or obligors, upon any and	State pledged
	all bonds or stipulations which shall be given in
	pursuance of the provisions of this act.
	SEC. 4. And be it further enacted, That this act
	shall take effect immediately from and after the date	Effective
	of its passage.
