tions: the first regiment, the fourth regiment, the fifth regi-
ment, the separate colored company, troop A cavalry and the
signal corps, now organized; the said three regiments to be
composed of twelve companies each, and all companies of
infantry organized as above provided for to consist of not less
than forty nor more than sixty enlisted men; the troop of
cavalry to consist of not less than forty nor more than one
hundred men; the signal corps to consist of one first lieuten-
ant, one second lieutenant, one first sergeant, three sergeants,
four corporals and twenty privates; and the naval brigade to
be composed of two battalions, to be known as the first and
second battalions, each battalion to be composed of not more
than three divisions, to be designated as follows: The first
battalion shall be composed of divisions one, three and five;
the second battalion shall be composed of divisions two, four
and six. Each division of each of said battalions shall con-
sist of not less than thirty-six petty officers and men as a min-
imum, and fifty-four petty officers and men as a maximum.
The above-named force, except the naval brigade, shall be
officered and organized as prescribed, from time to time, by
the regulations of the United States army, except that the
staff of each regiment shall consist of the following officers and
non-commissioned officers, viz.: one surgeon with rank of major;
three assistant surgeons with the rank of captain; one adju-
tant, one quartermaster, one commissary, one ordnance officer,
one paymaster, one chaplain, all with the rank of captain;
three battalion adjutants, each with the rank of first lieutenant;
all of whom shall be appointed and commissioned by the
governor on the nomination of the regimental commander; one
regimental sergeant-major, one quartermaster sergeant, one
commissary sergeant, one hospital steward, one ordnance ser-
geant, two color sergeants, three battalion hospital stewards
and three battalion sergeant-majors, all of whom shall be
enlisted men, appointed and warranted by the regimental com-
mander. In addition to the infantry, cavalry, signal corps and
naval commands of the State, the commander-in-chief may,
whenever in his judgment the State appropriation shall justify
the expenditure and the efficiency of the service require it,
authorize and direct the enlistment and formation of a battery
of artillery of four guns, the kind and calibre of the guns to
be designated by the commander-in-chief. The said brigade,
infantry, cavalry, artillery and signal corps shall be commanded
by a brigadier-general, or in case of a vacancy by the senior
