to be dealt with" according to the law governing the offence com-
mitted ; and in the execution of the duties of his office he shall
have all and the same powers as any constable, and be entitled to
the same fees; and his bond shall be liable as constables' bonds
are under the laws of this State; and he may be allowed such
salary as the mayor and council shall determine.

185. The mayor, when necessary, may appoint special bailiffs
for the town, not to act for more than one day; and every person
resisting the authority of the regular or special bailiffs shall be
liable to conviction and punishment in the same manner and to
the same extent as if resisting a constable.

186. The mayor and common council shall have power and
authority to pave the sidewalks of the streets in the town, and
to renew and repair and keep clean the sidewalks whenever,
in their judgment, the same may be necessary, and may assess
and levy the cost thereof as a tax upon the land fronting on
the sidewalk which shall be paved, renewed, repaired or cleaned,
eo that each lot of land may be charged with the payment of
the expense of paving the sidewalk or renewing,-repairing or
cleaning the same immediately in front thereof, and upon the
same side of the street on which the said lot of land is
situated; and the mayor and common council are authorized to
collect the said expenses, and if the same be not paid within
thirty days after the work is completed, they may distrain there-
for in the same manner that county taxes are distrained for in
Carroll county.

lish new streets, lanes and alleys, and to straighten, widen and
extend and close old streets, lanes and alleys; and all damages
done, suffered or incurred by the opening, closing, straightening,
widening, extending or improving of said streets, lanes or alleys,

persons interested therein, shall be determined and assessed by
