election to be held to fill such vacancy; and the council shall give
at least five days' notice of all elections by handbill put up at
least in three of the most public places in said town.

46. The mayor and council so elected may meet and adjourn
from time to time as they may think proper, and shall at their
first meeting, which shall be within one month after their elec-
tion, choose a secretary and treasurer, not necessarily from their
own number, who shall continue in office during the term for
which said mayor and council are elected, unless sooner removed
by said mayor and council; and require and take from the treas-
urer a bond in a penalty to be fixed by said mayor and council
for the faithful discharge of his duty as said treasurer; and said
secretary and treasurer shall receive such compensation for their
services as said mayor and council shall determine, but said mayor
and councilmen shall not receive any compensation for their
services.

47. They shall elect a constable or constables, an assessor and
collector of taxes, and such other officers as may be necessary for
the proper management of the corporate business of said town.
The mayor shall be president ex officio of said council, and the
said mayor and council shall do and perform everything required
or allowed by similar corporate bodies in the State of Maryland;
and they are hereby invested with all the powers and required
to perform all the duties authorized or required to be done by
or under this sub-title of this article.

48. Said mayor and council and all other officers of said town
shall, before entering upon the duties of their respective offices,
severally take the following oath: "I do solemnly swear that I
will faithfully execute the office of ———— to the best of my
knowledge and ability, without favor, affection or partiality."

ordinances to suppress all disorderly meetings; to prohibit the
use of profane or indecent language, drunkenness, fighting and
