550 CITY OF BALTIMORE. [ART. 4.

shall be maintained and kept in repair for public travel at the
expense of Baltimore city; all bridges crossing the Patapsco river
from said city, including the bridge known as the "Long" or
Light-street bridge, shall be maintained and kept in repair for
public travel at the sole expense of the said city of Baltimore.

825. The mayor and city council shall prescribe by ordinance
the duties and compensation of the city surveyor.

P. G. L., (1860,) art. 87, sec. 48.

826. A copy of the plat of the city of Baltimore, from the
record thereof in the mayor's office, or from the record thereof in
the office of the clerk of the superior court of Baltimore city,
duly certified under seal by the keeper of such records, respec-
tively, shall be evidence.

1874, ch. 180.

827. The mayor and city council of Baltimore are author-
ized and empowered to levy annually upon the assessable prop-
erty of the city, by direct tax, with full power to provide by
ordinance for the collection of the same, such sum of money as
may be necessary, in the judgment of the said mayor and city
council, for the purpose of defraying the expenses of said corpo-
ration over and exclusive of all expenses, charges and sums of
money which the said mayor and city council are, or shall ber
required by law to collect for other purposes.

828. They are empowered to levy and collect taxes upon every
description of property found within the corporate limits of said
city, which they are now authorized by law to levy taxes upon, for
the purpose of defraying the expenses of the municipal govern-
