approved by them, conditioned for the faithful performance of
his duties as collector of county taxes; the said treasurer shall
receive as compensation for his services as collector of both
State and county taxes, the annual sum of three thousand dollars,
to be paid to him quarterly.

42. In case the person so elected shall fail to execute the
bonds required in the preceding section, within thirty days after
his election to the office, or in the event of the treasurer's re-
moval from the county, death or resignation, the county commis-
sioners shall declare the said office vacant, and at once proceed to
fill the same by the appointment of a suitable person for the re-
mainder of the term, who shall, within such time as the commis-
sioners may direct, qualify and bond as directed in the preceding
section.

43. The treasurer shall enter in books kept for that purpose,
accounts of all taxes to be collected by him, with the names of
the owners of the property so taxed, the particulars thereof and
the rate and amount due on the same, together with all other
taxable property, and the rate and amounts due on the same, and
shall place thereon all credits, whether for money received,
transfers, insolvencies, discounts or abatements; and it shall be
the further duty of said treasurer to enter alphabetically on his
ledger the entire account of each taxpayer in one place, so the
whole may be seen and examined by the several persons to whom
the property is assessed.

44. He shall appoint such clerks as may be found necessary
to the proper discharge of the duties of his office, and shall be
allowed for such clerks' hire the sum of two thousand dollars per
annum.

45. It shall be the duty of the treasurer, as soon as the annual
tax levy is made, to give public notice thereof by advertisement,
three different times in two newspapers, having the largest circu-
lation, published in Baltimore county, and one in the city of
