1874, ch. 362.

61 He shall receive such annual salary as the county commis-
sioners shall direct, not exceeding the sum of five hundred
dollars.

62. All vacancies in the office of clerk shall be filled by the
county commissioners.

63. He shall give his personal attendance at the court house
during the hours of business every Tuesday, unless prevented by
sickness or other circumstances beyond his control; and in case
of failure, his office shall be deemed vacated, and the county
commissioners, at their next meeting thereafter, shall appoint
some other person in his place.

64. He is authorized and empowered to administer an oath

or affirmation to any person presenting a claim to the commis-
sioners against the county, for which services he shall be entitled
to make the same charge that is allowed to justices of the peace
of the county.'

1878, ch. 882.

65. The county commissioners shall levy annually such sum

of money as they may deem sufficient to pay the expenses which
may be annually incurred by the attendance of jurors, bailiffs,
crier and witnesses for the State, and for traversers, if ac-
quitted, in criminal cases in the circuit court; and said commis-
sioners shall cause said jurors, bailiffs and crier to be paid at the
end of each term of said court, and said witnesses upon the
termination of the case in said court for which they were
summoned.

66. It shall be the duty of the county commissioners, when-
ever any sheriff, State's attorney, clerk of the circuit court or
register of wills of said county shall present or render any bill of
fees, or other account or claim against the county, to them, for
levy, before levying for the same, to examine such sheriff,
