404. The clerk shall enter all ordinances passed by the com-
missioners in a book to be kept by him for that purpose, which
shall be open to the inspection of any person interested, and
copies of all ordinances shall be put up in the most public places
in said town.

405. The commissioners shall have power to make all such
by-laws and ordinances as from time to time they may deem
wise, equitable and expedient for the comfort, health, conveni-
ence and prosperity of the town and its inhabitants; for the
prevention and removal of nuisances; the preservation of health;
the suppression of vice and immorality; for the prevention of
the firing of guns and crackers, horse racing, cock fighting, and
all other improper practices within the limits of said town.

406. They may have an assessment made of all the property
within the taxable limits of the town,, and lay an equal tax on the
same to such amount as may from time to time be deemed
necessary for the purposes of the corporation, which tax shall be
collected by the burgess, who shall have the same power to
distrain therefor as the collector of the county taxes has; and the
commissioners shall allow such compensation to the said burgess,
for collecting said taxes, as they may deem proper.

407. The burgess shall see that all ordinances of the corpo-
ration are duly and faithfully executed, and shall, in virtue of his
office, have and exercise all the jurisdiction and powers of a
justice of the peace.

408. He shall be treasurer of the corporation, and shall give
bond to the corporation, with security approved by the commis-
sioners, in such penalty as they shall prescribe, conditioned for
the faithful performance of his duty as treasurer; and he shall
receive and pay away all moneys that he shall be directed to
receive and pay away by the ordinances of the corporation.
