the taxable limits of said town shall only extend a quarter of a
mile each way from said tavern.

273. The male citizens of Jefferson, of the age of twenty-one
years and upwards, who have resided in the town six months
next preceding the election, shall elect by ballot, on the first
Monday in May, in each year, at the town hall in the town, five
persons qualified in all respects as the said voters, commissioners
of the town.

274. The election polls shall be kept open from twelve
o'clock, M., until four o'clock, p. M., and the elections shall be
held and conducted in other respects as shall from time to time
be directed by the by-laws of the corporation, not inconsistent
with this sub-title of this article.

275. If any of the commissioners shall, during the year for
which they were elected, die, resign, remove from the town or
be otherwise disqualified, an election to fill the vacancy shall be
held; and all persons qualified to vote at the general election,
may vote at such special election.

shall require, on the business of the said corporation, and not less
than once in every three months; and they shall, at their first
meeting after an election, choose one of their number president
