State, except as to the collection of debts; and the constables shall
receive a salary to be fixed by ordinance, annually, and shall not
be entitled to receive any fees, costs or other emoluments.

182. All officers of the corporation not herein named, who

shall be deemed necessary to execute the laws and ordinances of
the corporation, shall be appointed in such manner as shall by
ordinance be 'directed, and they and all officers herein named shall
receive such salaries as shall be fixed from time to time by ordi-
nance of the corporation.

183. They mayor and each of the aldermen shall, in virtue of
their office, have and exercise within the limits of the corporation

all the jurisdiction and powers of a justice of the peace, except as

to the recovery of small debts.

city as shall be suitable and convenient for preserving the peace
and order of the city, and he may appoint at discretion special

constables for extra services, not exceeding twenty, whose duty it
shall be to aid him in preserving the peace, order and quiet of the

city, and he shall make the constables thus appointed such com-
pensation ont of the funds of the city as shall be suitable and

proper.

185. He shall, in lien of fees, receive an annual salary to be
fixed by ordinance of the corporation, and every ordinance fixing
such compensation shall continue in force for one year and no
longer.

186. He may take the acknowledgment of any deed or instru-
ment of writing required by law to be acknowledged, and any

acknowledgment so taken by him shall be valid, and he shall
