by private purchase for and during the term for which such
advertisement was made, to wit, the term of three months; pro-
vided, that such supplies shall not be directly or indirectly pur
chased or procured of either of the commissioners, nor shall either
of them directly or indirectly furnish the same.

33. It shall be the duty of the county commissioners to levy,
for the use of the said commissioners of charities and corrections,
annually, such sum of money as the commissioners may estimate
to be necessary for the purposes specified in the foregoing sections,
and to pay over to the commissioners the sum so levied in equal
quarterly instalments, beginning with the end of the first three
months succeeding the levy.

34. It shall be the duty of the commissioners, annually, in
the month of January, to submit, under their oaths or affirma-
tions, to the county commissioners, a detailed statement of all
their receipts and disbursements of every kind whatsoever, and
they shall file with the county commissioners at the time all
vouchers and copies of all contracts under which money has
ibeen expended, and a full list of the names of persons confined
jn jail, for whose support and maintenance the commissioners
iave provided.

35. It shall be the duty of the sheriff to furnish, under oath,
once each month, to the commissioners, a full and complete list
of the names and descriptions of all persons confined in the jail,
with a statement of the length of time and offence for which
they are committed, and the name of the officer by whom com-
mitted. For any neglect by the sheriff to comply with this or
any other section, he shall be subject, upon indictment and con-
viction, to a fine of not less than five hundred dollars.

36. It shall be the duty of the sheriff to exhibit to the com-
missioners whenever demanded by them, or by either of them,
all books, papers and commitments kept by him pertaining to
