age of fourteen years, within the limits of this State, unless
previously authorized in writing by the parents or guardian of
such minor, or where such minor is acting solely as the agent of
his employer.

1886, ch. 371, sec. 2.

146. Any person or persons, or body corporate, whether man-
ufacturer, dealer or vendor, violating the provisions of the pre-
ceding section, shall, upon conviction thereof in any court of
competent jurisdiction, be fined in a sum of not less than ten
dollars nor more than one hundred dollars for each and every
offence, or be imprisoned in jail for not less than five nor more-
than thirty days in default of payment of said fine.

147. Of all fines accruing under the provisions of the pre-
ceding section in the several counties of this State, the moiety or
one-half part shall be applied to the support and maintenance of
the pauper insane of the respective counties; and in the city of
Baltimore, said moiety or one-half part of said fines so
imposed, as herein provided, shall be distributed in equal propor-
tions among the different dispensaries in said city.

Health-Workshops and Factories.

1884, ch. 265, sec. 1.

148. All factories, manufacturing establishments or work-
shops in this State, shall be kept in a cleanly condition and free
from effluvia arising from any drain, privy or other nuisance;
and no factory, manufacturing establishment or work-shop shall
be so overcrowded while work is carried on therein as to be inju-
rious to the health of the persons employed therein; and every
such factory, manufacturing establishment or work-shop shall be
well and sufficiently lighted and ventilated in such a manner as
to render harmless, as far as practicable, all the gases, vapors,
dust or other impurities generated in the course of the manu-
facturing process or handicraft carried on therein, which may be.
injurious to health.
