1004 MILITIA—MARYLAND NATIONAL GUARD. [ART. 65.

by the laws of the State of Maryland and of the United States,
to qualify him to discharge the duties of his office."

25. Whenever the board of police commissioners for the city
of Baltimore, or the sheriff of any county, shall call out any por-
tion of the militia to aid in preventing threatened disorder or
opposition to the laws, or in suppressing riot or disorder on elec-
tion days, or at any other times, as provided by law, said military
force shall be deemed to be on detached service, while under the
orders of the said board or sheriff, and the commanding officer
thereof shall not be subject to the orders of any superior officer

whatsoever, except the commander-in-chief.

26. Ont of the volunteer uniformed organizations already

existing and those hereby created, there shall be formed a body
of active militia, to consist of not more than thirty-eight com-
panies, and to contain not more than twenty-two hundred and
eighty enlisted men, to be enlisted, organized and maintained as
hereinafter provided, to be known as the "Maryland National

Guard," and to be located and distributed throughout the State,
as follows:

27. Said entire force shall be formed and organized into one
brigade, and until otherwise provided by the general assembly,
shall consist of the following organizations, to wit: The Fifth
regiment; the Baltimore light infantry, three companies; the
Ringgold rifle corps infantry, one company; the Leonardtown
rifles, (St. Mary's county); the Governor's guard, (Annapolis);
the Groome guard, (Elkton); the Towson guard, (Towson); the
Bond guard, (Catonsville); the Kent guard, (Kent county); the
Frederick rifles, (Frederick county); the Hagerstown light infan-
try, (Hagerstown); the Linganore guard, (Frederick county); the
Jackson guards, (Harford county); the "Voltigeurs and the
Hamilton light infantry, (Cumberland); the Garrett guard,
(Oakland); company D., (Frostburg); Lloyd guard, Cambridge);
the Waverly guard, (Baltimore city); Howard zouaves,
