attending such proceeding, in case such judgment shall
be confirmed, and in all cases of appeal either party
shall be entitled to trial by jury.

SHEEP AND Does.

1870, c. 189 entitled an act to provide for the protection of sheep in Queen Anne's,
Dorchester and Somerset counties, and for re-embursing owners of sheep for dam-
ages sustained by them in the killing or injuring of sheep by dogs, enacts as follows:

252. The county commissioners, respectively, of
Queen Anne's, Dorchester and Somerset counties shall
require an accurate return to be made annually, in
the months of July and August, by the constables of
the several election districts in said counties of all dogs
upwards of four months old owned or kept by any
person within their said districts, particularly noting
the number owned or kept by each person, and more
effectually to secure the performance of this duty and
the collection of the tax hereinafter directed to be
levied; and when there are two or more constables
in any of the said election districts, the said commis-
sioners shall divide and apportion said district among
the constables of said district.

253. The said county commissioners of the said
several counties respectively, shall levy forthwith, and
cause to be collected annually, by the constable or con-
stables aforesaid, the sum of one dollar for one dog,
and fifty cents each for every additional dog owned or
kept by each person named in said return as the owner
or keeper thereof.

254. The said constables in the said several election)
districts in the said several counties aforesaid, shall pro-
ceed to collect the sum so levied and apportioned among
them by the said county commissioners as soon as the
levy list is placed in their hands, in the same manner
as now provided by law for the collection of state and
county taxes in the said several counties, and shall keep
and return an accurate account, under oath, of the
money arising therefrom, together with the money col-
