97. Any person who shall obstruct, fill up, or other-
wise wilfully injure the drains made for conducting the
water from the public roads, of shall encroach upon
any public roads by fences or other obstructions, or dig
any ditch or drain across any road, and not keep such
ditch or drain well covered and in good repair for the
passage of vehicles over the same, or if any person
shall drain any water into or upon any public road,
each and every such person, for every such offence,
shall be subject to a fine, for the use of the county,
of not less than ten nor more than one hundred dol-
lars.

98. All gates on the public roads of Charles county
shall be so made and hung as not to cause unnecessary
delay or hindrance to travellers, and any person who

and hung, shall be subject to a fine not exceeding ten
dollars, for the use of the county.

SHERIFF.
1870, c. 435 amends section 140 by adding thereto the following clause:

140. * * * And the said sheriff may be allowed by
said commissioners, in their discretion, any sum they
may deem reasonable for the payment of any person
necessarily employed by him in the custody and safe-
keeping of such prisoners so confined in jail.
