year, at such time and place as they shall designate,
and shall give five days previous notice thereof, by
advertisement, to be posted at the hotel and the
academy, in said village, and such other public places
as they may deem necessary.

Streets, &c.

114. The said commissioners shall have full power
to open, extend, widen, close or straighten any street,
lane or alley in said village, which in their judgment
the public welfare and convenience may require.

Levy.

115. The said commissioners may levy upon the
assessable property within said village by direct tax,
not exceeding fifty cents in the hundred dollars, such
sum as they may deem necessary for the purpose of
defraying the expenses of said corporation, and of
opening, closing, extending and improving the streets,
lanes or alleys in said village, and of building, repair-.
ing or improving the public wells and pumps and fire
engines belonging to said corporation, in such manner
as they may deem expedient, with full power to col-
lect the same as is hereinafter provided.

Tax lists.

116. The said commissioners shall, as soon after the
expiration of the time for hearing appeals as practica-
ble, proceed to ascertain the amount necessary to be
levied for the use of the said corporation and the rate
of taxation, and shall cause to be made and delivered
to the bailiff a book containing an alphabetical list of
the tax payers in said village, together with the aggre-
gate assessment of each, and the rate of taxation and
amount of taxes due and owing from each tax payer
under said levy and assessment.

117. Immediately upon the receipt by him of the
book specified in the preceding section, the bailiff shall
proceed to collect all taxes levied by the said commis-
sioners, and shall pay over the same, whenever required
so to do by the said commissioners, to the treasurer of

refuse to pay said taxes, or shall neglect or refuse to
pay any fines or forfeitures levied or imposed by the
said commissioners, the bailiff shall proceed to collect
