SCHOOLS.
1882, c. 277 repeals sections 256, 262, 273 and 276 and substitutes the following:

256. A tax which in addition to the school fund
of Washington county, derived from other sources,
may be necessary and sufficient to sustain the public
schools thereof nine months in each year, shall be
levied annually by the county commissioners, on the
assessable property of said county, to be collected as
other taxes are, and paid over to the board of school
commissioners at their order.

Election of
trustees.
|
262. The legal voters of each school district, shall
assemble annually at the school house of the district,
on such day as the school commissioners shall direct,
and elect from the inhabitants thereof three discreet
persons, who shall constitute a board of trustees for
said school, and shall serve for one year from the
date of their election, and until their successors are
elected, provided at least fifteen days' previous notice
in writing, shall be set up in at least three of the
most public places in said district, specifying the time
and place of such election.

What children
to be admitted.
|
273. They shall admit no child into any of their
schools, under the age of five years or over the age
of seventeen years, unless the usual subscription fee
for the desired instruction shall be paid them in
advance per quarter, for each quarter; and for such
fees, they shall account to the board of school com-
missioners, to be applied as a part of the school fund.

276. They shall require all parents or guardians of
the children attending the schools, between the age
of five and seventeen years, to pay the sum of one
dollar for each child in advance per quarter, for each
quarter such child may attend the same, and account
to the board of school commissioners therefor, to be

Proviso
|
applied as a part of the school fund; provided, that
whenever in their judgment the parents or guardians
are unable to pay, their children shall be admitted
free of charge.
