SCHOOLS.
1862, c. 146 repeals section 60 and substitutes the following:

Books and sta-
tionery.

60. They shall, from time to time, name such
books as shall be used in the primary schools, and
such books shall be uniform in the several schools;
and the trustees of each school district shall appro-
priate out of the school funds of the district, a sum
not exceeding thirty dollars a year, for the purchase
of books and stationery, under the direction of said
inspectors.

1862, c. 160 adds the following between sections IS and 74:

Public exami-
nations.

73. It shall be the duty of the trustees of each
primary school in Howard county, to have a public
examination of the scholars of such school at the
school house, at least once in every year, which
examination shall be attended by the said trustees
and the progress of said schools as evinced by said
examination, shall be reported to the inspectors of
primary schools, to aid such inspectors in forming
an opinion of the qualifications of the teachers of

said schools, and the trustees shall report the fact
that said examination has been held, to the com-
missioners of said county, as preliminary to draw-
log any money for the said school.
