measurement, or if any person or persons shall know-
ingly purchase or receive any fire wood brought by
water or railroad to the city of Baltimore, which has
not been corded, inspected and passed by one of the
corders or inspectors aforesaid, shall forfeit and pay

 

two dollars per cord, and so in proportion for any
less quantity of wood so sold and delivered, or pur-
chased by him or them, to be recovered in the name
of the state, one-half for the use of the informer, the
other half for the benefit of the state, before a justice
of the peace in the same manner as small debts are
now recoverable by law.

Penalty for re-
ceiving without
inspection.

657. No person engaged in vending or trading in
wood, or as a partner, as clerk or agent for a trader
or vender of wood, shall be appointed inspector or
corder, nor shall any inspector or corder while hold-
ing his office be so engaged, directly or indirectly,
and the governor may summarily dismiss or remove
from office such inspector or corder on receiving
satisfactory proof of a violation on his part of the
provisions of this act.

658. Any person not duly appointed according to
the provisions of this act, who shall act as such in- specter or corder of wood in the city of Baltimore,
shall forfeit and pay the sum of two hundred dollars,
the said penalty to be imposed on conviction of the
offender on indictment in the criminal court of Balti-
more city, one-half to the informer, the other half to
the state of Maryland.

559. Each inspector appointed under the provi-
sions of this act, shall on the receipt of his commis-
sion pay to the treasurer of the state, for the use of
the state, the sum of fifty dollars, and on the expira-
tion of one year from the date thereof, an additional
sum of fifty dollars, the failure of payment of which
shall be deemed and taken as a resignation of the
office of inspector ; and no person can act as inspec-
tor or corder of fire wood in the city of Baltimore,
unless having first complied with the requirements
of this section.
