37. And the sheriff of Baltimore city, or such of his deputies
as he shall designate, shall attend before the said clerks, and it
shall be the duty of the said sheriff, or his deputy as aforesaid,
in the presence of the said clerks and such other persons as
may choose to attend in said court, to draw, one by one, all the
ballots contained in the said box, and as the said ballots are
drawn, the names appearing thereon, shall be duly recorded in
the order in which they shall be drawn by the said clerks, or
under their personal direction and inspection, by some person
to be appointed by the judges aforesaid.

POLICE.
Chapter 46 amends sections 811, 812 as follows: (I. Supplement, 48; II. Supple-
ment, 64. )
38. The pay of an ordinary policeman shall be eighteen dol-
lars a week, payable semi-monthly; and in case the board shall
appoint detective policemen, which they may to the number of
five, the detectives shall receive the sum of twenty dollars a
week, payable semi-monthly; the said detectives shall not be
allowed to follow any other business, but shall devote their
whole time to their duties as detectives.
39. The officers of the police shall be paid semi-monthly, and
their pay shall be as follows: The marshal shall receive eighteen
hundred dollars a year; the deputy marshal shall receive thir-
teen hundred a year; each captain twenty-two dollars a week;
each lieutenant twenty dollars a week; each sergeant nineteen
dollars a week; and each turnkey fourteen dollars a week.
40. The pay herein provided for the policemen and officers of
police aforesaid, shall continue only until the first day of April
eighteen hundred and sixty-seven, and from and after said day
the pay of said policemen and detective policemen and officers
of police, shall be the same as now provided by law.
