necessary, to administer the disbursement, of such direct Relief Funds as
the Budget may provide, and to prepare in proper form and present and
prosecute the claims of ex-service men and women and their dependents,
with the United States Veterans Administration and other Federal agen-
cies, and to secure and expedite action on said claims. It shall be the duty
of the State Service Officer to keep in contact with the United States
Veterans Administration, so that the status of any claim shall be known at
any time; to continue to survey the State, in order that no Veterans or their
dependents may be neglected and to perform such other duties as the Com-
mission may direct. The State Service Officer, and such other employees
as the Commission may deem necessary, shall be compensated as provided
by the Commission, within the limits of the Budgetary allowances for the
administration of Veterans' affairs, and shall be paid actual and necessary
traveling expenses while engaged in the performance of such duties as the
Commission may authorize and direct.
The Maryland Veterans Commission shall make and preserve a perma-
nent registry of the graves of all persons who served in the Military or
Naval forces of the United States in time of war and who are buried in the
State of Maryland.1
War Memorial Commission.

85. A War Memorial Commission consisting of ten (10) members be
and is hereby created and that the Governor of the State of Maryland is
hereby authorized, empowered and directed to appoint five (5) members
of said Commission, and that the Mayor of the City of Baltimore is hereby
authorized, directed and empowered to appoint five (5) members of the
said Commission.

86. The terms of the members of this Commission shall be for five
years, but that of the first five (5) commissioners appointed by the Governor
and of the first (5) appointed by the Mayor of Baltimore, one shall be
appointed for a term of five (5) years, one for a term of four years, one
for a term of three (3) years, one for a term of two (2) years, and one for
a term of one (1) year, from June 30, 1924. Said Commission is hereby
authorized to elect a Chairman, a Vice Chairman, a Secretary and a
Treasurer, or a Secretary-Treasurer. No member of said Commission shall
receive any salary or compensation, except payment of actual expenses
authorized by a vote of the Commission and so recorded in its minutes.

87. The War Memorial Commission is hereby authorized, empowered
and directed to adopt and enforce regulations providing for the management
of the War Memorial Building so that the War Memorial Building may be
of the greatest possible use both to the people of the State of Maryland and
of the City of Baltimore, and to the patriotic societies and organizations
of the State of Maryland and the City of Baltimore, and as far as possible
without expense to the patriotic societies and organizations of the State of
Maryland and the City of Baltimore.
