531. The County Commissioners of Baltimore County be and they
are hereby authorized to make such provision for pensioning the widow
and infant children of policemen who have been killed in the active dis-
charge of their duty as members of the Police Department as in the judg-
ment of such Commissioners shall be just and proper.

532. It shall be the duty of said marshal to require each policeman,
at such times of the day or night as he may be upon duty, to preserve the
public peace, prevent crime and protect the rights of persons and prop-
erty, to see that all laws relating to the observance of Sunday and in
regard to gambling, intemperance, vagrants and disorderly persons are
strictly enforced and to assist the sanitary officer of his district to enforce
faithfully and strictly all laws, rules, and orders that now exist or which
may hereafter be passed or issued for the purpose of maintaining and
preserving the public health, and to arrest all offenders against the laws
of the State and to take such offenders to the nearest justice of the peace
for said county; and for any neglect or violation of the provisions of this
section by any officer of the force, said marshal shall suspend such officer
and report his action in the case, with the charges preferred in writing
against such officer, to the County Commissioners at their next meeting,
for their investigation and filial action.

533. The pay of each patrolman shall not be less than seventy dollars
per month and the pay of the marshall shall not be less than one hundred
dollars per month, and the pay of such other officers as the County Com-
missioners may designate in order to promote the proper government,
discipline and efficiency of said police force shall not be less than seventy
dollars per month; all pay rolls to be made out monthly and certified as
required by the County Commissioners; provided, however, that nothing
in this Act shall be taken to regulate the pay of any special officer or
station house keeper now or hereafter to be appointed by the said County
Commissioners of Baltimore County, but their pay shall be entirely in
the discretion of said County Commissioners.

534. The County Commissioners of Baltimore County shall levy an-
nually a sufficient sum, upon the taxable property in Baltimore County
to pay said policemen, including the marshal or officers of any other desig-
nation or rank on said force, and for such other and proper expenses as
in their judgment may be required to promote the efficiency, discipline and
usefulness of such police force.
