municipal purposes and such further sums that are now or may be
hereafter authorized by law for the liquidation of indebtedness; any taxes
levied in pursuance of the provisions in this section shall be a lien as
now provided by law, and shall be collected as State and county taxes are
collected.

503. The burgess and commissioners shall have power to pass all ordi-
nances necessary for the good government of the town; to prevent, remove
and abate nuisances or obstructions upon the streets, highways, lanes or
alleys, drains or water courses, or in or upon the lots adjacent thereto,
and to provide for the imposing of a fine upon any person causing or
creating any such nuisance or obstruction; to remove, or cause to be
removed, houses or other structures that may be dangerous to persons
passing along and over any of the streets or alleys of the town; to regulate
and provide for the issuing of licenses or permits for all hawking, peddling
and vending of wares and merchandise of every description upon the
streets and highways of the town, and to issue licenses to all itinerant
peddlers who may go from house to house to vend or sell any wares or
merchandise; to regulate and provide for the issuing of licenses to all
traveling persons who dispense medicines or medical advice; they shall
have power to demand a license from all players and showmen exhibiting
upon the streets or in tents within the limits of said town; to levy a
tax and impose a license upon dogs, and impose a license upon all gas
companies, electric light companies, water companies and telephone com-
panies, located or doing business in said town, provided no greater sum
than fifty dollars be charged for any one license.

504. The burgess and commissioners shall have authority to require
all property holders to make sidewalks in front of their premises and
keep the same in repair, the burgess and commissioners may prescribe
the proper grade and require the curbing to be set up in accordance
therewith and such materials used as shall secure a safe, solid and con-
venient footway for the public, and the burgess and commissioners may
also require the property holders to make a paved gutter and waterway
outside the curb the length of his premises according to such grade and
specifications as the board shall furnish; if the work be not done within
three months from the date of notification, the burgess and commission-
ers may order the same to be done at the expense of the owners of the
different lots in front of which the same shall be done, and the cost thereof
shall be lien against the property and collected as town taxes are collected.

opening, extending, widening, straightening, or closing up, in whole or in
part any street, highway, lane, alley, drain or any water course within the
