for his services as police justice as are allowed justices of the peace for a
similar service.

498. All fines and forfeitures imposed by the ordinance of the corpo-
ration shall be recoverable before the said police justice, but no fine or
forfeiture imposed under any ordinance of said corporation shall exceed
the sum of fifteen dollars.
1906, ch. 315, sec. 241B.
499. From any judgment rendered by the said police justice in the
enforcement of the ordinance of the town of Hancock an appeal shall lie
by the person aggrieved to the Circuit Court for Washington county;
provided, the appeal is taken within three days after the rendering of the
judgment, and provided the person so aggrieved shall enter into good and
sufficient bond, approved by the said police justice, for the faithful prose-
cution of the appeal, and for the payment of all costs in case the judgment
be affirmed; but no appeal shall stay process or execution upon judgment
unless a bond is given as above provided.

500. If the police justice wilfully neglects any duties imposed upon
him by the provisions of this charter, or refuses to pay over the fines
collected by him as herein directed, he shall be liable to indictment in the
Circuit Court for Washington county, and upon conviction shall be fined
the sum of fifty dollars or imprisonment in the county jail for a term
not exceeding three months, or both, in the discretion of the court.

501. The burgess and commissioners are hereby empowered to erect a
lockup for the confinement of persons arrested for violating any town
ordinance, or for the non-payment of any fine imposed under the provi-
sions of this charter.
1906, ch. 315, sec. 241E.
502. All property within the limits of the corporation of Hancock, or
what may have situs there by reason of the residence of the owner
therein, shall be taxed for municipal purpose, and in any case any
real estate assessed for State and county purposes be divided by the town
boundary, the burgess and commissioners of Hancock shall place a fair
valuation upon that part contained within the town limits, and make a
just apportionment of said assessment; should any property liable to be
taxed for town purposes be omitted in the county assessment, the said
burgess and commissioners shall have power to include said property in
the town assessment and impose a just valuation thereon, and the said
burgess and commissioners shall annually levy on the assessable property
of the town all needful taxes not exceeding an amount of one hundred
cents on every one hundred dollars' worth of assessable property for
