of the Burgess and Council, and pay over the same to the Treasurer at such
times as may be provided by ordinance of the Burgess and Council, and
for his services shall receive annual salary of one hundred dollars ($100).

48. The Assistant Burgess, in the absence of the Burgess, shall preside
at all meetings of the Council, and when the Burgess is present shall have
the same power as one of the Councilmen. The Assistant Burgess and
each 'Councilman shall receive an annual salary of twenty-five ($25.00)
dollars, and no other fee or compensation whatever, except as hereinafter
provided by Section 56.

49. In case of a vacancy in the position of Assistant Burgess or Coun-
cilman by death or otherwise, the Burgess and Council shall choose a per-
son duly qualified to fill the vacancy, and said person so chosen shall serve
until the next succeeding annual election.

50. It shall be the duty of the Burgess, at least ten days prior to the
day of holding any election for officers of the town, to give notice thereof
by handbills posted in at least ten conspicuous places in the town, which
notice shall state the offices to be voted for or the object and purpose of

such election.

51. All elections shall commence at one o'clock in the afternoon of the
respective days of election, and shall continue without adjournment, and
shall be closed at six o'clock in the evening of the same day, and no ballot
shall be taken before the said hour of one o'clock in the afternoon nor
after the hour of six o'clock in the evening.

52. The Council shall convene at least once in every month during the
year, and as much oftener as may be required.

53. At the first regular meeting after each annual election, and after
the qualification of the newly-elected members, or as soon thereafter as
may be convenient, the Burgess, with the advice and consent of the Coun-
cil, shall appoint one person as clerk, one person as collector of taxes, one
bailiff, and such other officers as may be provided for the conduct and reg-
ulation of municipal affairs, except as herein otherwise provided; and in
case of any vacancy or removal of any officer so appointed, the Burgess
shall fill such vacancy for the unexpired term, with the advice and con-
sent of the Council, as hereinbefore provided; either of the above-named

officers shall be subject to removal by a vote of two-thirds of the whole
Council or a vote of three Councilmen, with the approval of the Burgess.
