446 ARTICLE 2.

1920, ch. 352, sec. 2.

290. For the violation of the aforegoing section the offender or offend-
ers shall be liable to a fine of not more than five dollars for the first offense
and not more than twenty-five dollars for any subsequent offense, to be
imposed by any Justice of the Peace of Anne Arundel County, upon
whom jurisdiction is hereby conferred for the purposes of this Act, said
fines to be collected as other fines are now collected in said county, and
in default in the payment thereof, to be committed to jail of said county
for a period not exceeding thirty (30) days.

291. It shall be unlawful for the captain, owner or any person in
charge of any steamboat or other vessel to land any excursion party at
Galesville, on West River, in Anne Arundel County, or within two miles
thereof, on the Sabbath day, commonly called Sunday; and any person so
offending shall, upon conviction thereof in the Circuit Court, or before
any justice of the peace of said county, be fined not less than twenty-five
dollars, nor more than two hundred dollars, together with the costs of
prosecution, and shall stand committed until such fine and costs be paid;
provided, that any person so convicted before any justice of the peace as
aforesaid, shall in any such case have the right of appeal to the Circuit
Court at any time within sixty days after such conviction; and upon the
trial of such appeal the court shall have the right to amend the warrant
or any of the proceedings before the justice of the peace so as to bring
the case to trial on its merits; provided, that no new offense shall be
charged; and in case such an amendment shall work a surprise to the de-
fendant he shall have further time to prepare for trial, as the court shall
direct.

292. It shall be unlawful for any person or persons, or association of
persons, or for any corporation, to bet, wager or gamble, in any manner
or by any means; or to make, sell or buy books or pools, or any interest
therein, within the limits of Anne Arundel County, on the result of any
trotting, pacing or running race of horses or other beasts, or race, or con-
test of any kind, trotted, run or paced, or held within or without the
limits of Anne Arundel County, or to establish, keep, rent, use or occupy,
or knowingly suffer to be established, kept, rented, used or occupied, any
house, building, vessels, grounds or place, or portion of any house, build-
ing, vessel, grounds or place on land or water, within the limits of Anne
Arundel County, for the purpose of betting, wagering or gambling in any
manner or by any means; or for the purpose of making, selling or buying
books or pools therein or thereon upon the result of any such race or con-
test aforesaid; or within the limits of Anne Arundel County by any means
or devices whatsoever, to receive, become the depository of, record or
