276. If any Police Justice shall be unable by reason of sickness, ab-
sence, relationship or other temporary cause whatever to attend to his
duties as such Police Justice, it shall be the duty of the State's Attorney
for Queen Anne's County, to designate and require another Justice of
the Peace of said county, to perform the duties of said Police Justice so
sick, absent or otherwise unable to perform the duties of his office, so long
as the same may be necessary, and the State's Atorney shall forthwith
certify any selection he may make to the County Commissioners of Queen
Anne's County. The justice so required to perform said duties as Police
Justice shall receive the same compensation prescribed for said Police
Justice, and shall be paid by the County Commissioners, who shall deduct
the same from the salary of the Police Justice for whom he was serving.
And in the event of death, removal or resignation of said Police Justice
so appointed by the provisions of this Act the Governor shall appoint and
designate some other person possessing the necessary qualification to act
as and in the place of said Police Justice for the remainder of the term
for which said Police Justice had been appointed; provided, however, that
said Justice so appointed shall comply with the provisions of this Act
in the matter of giving bond.*
KENT ISLAND CANAL.
1929, ch. 577, sec. 1.
277. The Claiborne-Annapolis Ferry Company, a Maryland corpora-
tion, its successors and assigns, is hereby authorized and empowered to
dig, construct and maintain a canal across Kent Island, in Queen Anne's.
County, from Eastern Bay to Chesapeake Bay.
1929, ch. 577, sec". 2.
278. The County Commissioners of Queen Anne's County are hereby
authorized and empowered, in the event that such canal is constructed,
or the work of construction is begun, to grant the Claiborne-Annapolis
Ferry Company permission to dig and construct said canal across and
through any existing public roads in the path of the canal, particularly the
county road running south from Stevensville to Kent Point; and any such
grant or permission made by the County Commissioners prior to the
passage of this Act is hereby ratified and confirmed.

279. The County Commissioners are hereby authorized and empow-
ered to construct a bridge or to maintain a ferry service across the canal,
when constructed, in substitution for that part of any public road which-
may be crossed by the canal authorized by this Act.
*Sec. 11, ch. 69, 1929, repealed all laws inconsistent therewith.
