4224 ARTICLE 18.

shall be committed to the jail of said county, and that he will, in all
respects, truly and honestly demean himself in his office of keeper of said
jail without prejudice, affection, malice, hatred or partiality, so long as
he shall continue in said office; and also by entering into a recognizance
before the said justice, with two sufficient sureties, in the sum of four
hundred dollars, in the usual form, with the condition therewith, "that
if the said A. B. do and shall well and faithfully execute and perform
the office of keeper of the jail of Queen Anne's county, and find and pro-
vide wholesome and sufficient victuals for all and singular the prisoners
who shall be committed to the said jail, and keep the several apartments
in the said jail clear and free from all manner of filth, and not suffer or
permit loose, idle or disorderly persons to frequent the said jail or remain
about the same, and do and shall in all respects faithfully demean him-
self in the said office, without favor, partiality or prejudice, then the said
recognizance to be void and of no effect, otherwise to remain in force."

239. In addition to the duties imposed by the laws of this State upon
all jailers, it shall be his duty to receive and provide for all manner of
persons who may be committed to said jail according to law, and to be
obedient to the mittimus of the sheriff of said county, in those cases in
which the said sheriff has power to confine by virtue of process or pursuant
to the laws of this State.

240. In addition to the perquisites and fees allowed by the said sheriff,
he shall be entitled to a residence in said jail for himself and family, free
from rent, upon his keeping the several apartments in his possession in
sufficient repair, and taking care of the entire premises.

241. He shall be entitled to receive for boarding and keeping any
prisoner in said jail, such sum per day as the County Commissioners for
said county may in their discretion determine, said sum not to be less
than fifty cents, nor more than seventy-five cents per day, and to an annual
allowance from said county sufficient to furnish fuel for the comfort and
benefit of said prisoners.

242. He shall, during his continuance in office, be disqualified from
holding any ordinary house of entertainment, and from retailing spiritu-
ous liquors.

243. He shall not sell spirituous liquors, nor cause or suffer them to
be sold, to any of the prisoners confined in said jail, or to any person for
their use, and upon conviction- thereof he shall forfeit the sum of ten
