not exceeding six, as in this Act provided, with the right to reject any or
all of the persons so designated by the sheriff; and should there remain
to be appointed a number insufficient to constitute as many of said Con-
stables at Large as the County Commissioners desire to be appointed, the
County Commissioners shall themselves, without further recommendation
from the sheriff, complete the appointments by the designation of such
person or persons as to them seem best fitted. And the County Commis-
sioners shall have at any and all times the power and authority to remove
any one or more of said Constables at Large, and so appointed, at the
pleasure of a majority of the Board, with, or without notice; and to fill
any vacancies that may occur for unexpired terms in the manner herein-
before prescribed for original appointments.

333. The Constables at Large, and so appointed, shall each receive a
salary not exceeding the sum of fifteen hundred dollars ($1,500) per
annum, payable monthly, and no other fees or compensation whatsoever,
except however that in addition to the salary aforesaid those so appointed
at large shall each receive the sum of three hundred dollars ($300) per
annum, payable monthly, in lieu of all other expenses to the County for
the maintenance and up-keep of a motorcycle or motor vehicle to be fur-
nished by the County Commissioners in such number as in their discre-
tion they may think necessary, as well as any expenses for uniforms that
the sheriff as the Chief of Police may require to be worn. Provided
however, that of the Constables at Large so appointed by the County
Commissioners they shall designate one of said number as a Sergeant of
Police, who shall receive the sum of eighteen hundred dollars ($1,800)
per annum, payable monthly, and the same sum of three hundred dollars
($300) in lieu of all other expenses to the County for the maintenance
and up-keep of a motorcycle or motor vehicle, whichever may be furnished
by the County Commissioners and used by the Sergeant of Police in the
performance of his duties as herein prescribed. That the sheriff as the
Chief of Police shall have control and supervision over the other members
of the force, and shall assign them to such duties, and at such hours, and
at such locations as he may deem proper; and he shall prescribe such rules
and regulations to govern and direct said force in the execution of writs,
summons and process and other duties to be performed by them, as will
be most conducive to the quick administration of law and justice. He
shall so arrange his office and his force of assistants as at both day and
night, in emergency, communication can be got with his office, and his
assistants, and relief promptly had whenever and wherever actually and
justifiably required.

334. The Constables at Large, so appointed, are hereby required to
report to the sheriff as the Chief of Police immediately after their appoint-
ment and qualification, and at all times shall be under the control and
supervision of their Chief; and each and all members of said force shall
at all times while on duty, unless for good reasons otherwise ordered by
