interest in the same, thus valued, as fully as if it had been conveyed by
the owner of the same; and the valuation, if not received when tendered,
may at any time thereafter be recovered from the said corporation, without
costs, by the said owner, or his legal representatives.

283. The aldermen may pass all laws and ordinances necessary to pre-
serve the health of the city; prevent and remove nuisances; to prevent
the introduction of contagious diseases within the city and within three
miles thereof; to establish night watches and patrols, and erect lamps;
to establish new streets, lanes and alleys, with consent of a majority of
the proprietors of the lots or houses adjoining such streets, lanes or alleys;
to erect and repair bridges; to pave and keep in repair all necessary
drains and sewers, and to pass all necessary regulations for the preserva-
tion of the same.

284. They may pass ordinances to regulate and fix the size of bread;
to provide for the appointment and define the duties of market masters,
gangers, wood corders, hay weighers and inspectors, and to provide for
the safe keeping and preservation of the standards of weights and meas-
ures, and for the regulating thereby all weights and measures used in
said town.

285. They may provide by ordinance for the regulation of party walls
and partition fences; they may erect and regulate markets; provide for
licensing and regulating the sweeping and burning of chimneys, and
fixing the rates thereof within said city, and for ascertaining the size of
chimneys built therein.

286. They may establish and regulate fire wards and fire companies,
regulate and establish the size of bricks used in said city and erect and
regulate pumps in the streets, lanes and alleys.

censing, regulating or restraining theatrical or other public amusements

of the city; to prevent cock-fighting, horse racing and drunkenness; to
